Das KONZEPT zur transatlantische Austausch-Bildungsplattform vom Street-College-Berlin und dem Stella-und-Charles-Guttman-Community-College NYC Bereits seit dem Jahr 2008 führt Gangway e.V. erfolgreich ein Jugend Hip Hop Austausch-Programm zwischen Berlin und New York City durch, das sich „BronxBerlinConnection“ nennt. Das Projekt gewann im letzten Jahr den Preis „Ausgezeichnete Orte im Land der Ideen“ und durfte sich über die Jahre diverser Medienberichte erfreuen. Mit insgesamt fünf Gruppenbesuchen nach NYC und vier Rückbesuchen unserer Partnergruppen aus NYC in Berlin haben wir wertvolle Erfahrungen rund um das Thema „Bildungsprozesse im Rahmen von transatlantischen Jugendaustauschprojekten“ sammeln können. Eines der wichtigen Ziele des STREET COLLEGE ist es, Zugänge zu schaffen zu Bildung und Beruf – aber einfach auch Möglichkeiten zu bieten, Interessen zu verfolgen, die sonst nicht oder nur schwer realisierbar wären. Nicht zuletzt gewann die „BronxBerlinConnection“ im letzten Jahr keinen Preis, weil der Ansatz „Jugendaustausch“ so besonders innovativ wäre, sondern weil wir diese Reisen mit jungen Menschen antreten, die in vielen Fällen von den herkömmlichen Austauschangeboten nicht erreicht werden. Durch ein hervorragend aufgestelltes Netzwerk in New York City und Berlin und Diskussionen mit unserem Projektpartner „The Stella and Charles Guttman Community College“ in NYC über Umstände unserer Zielgruppen in beiden Städten, die im Rahmen von Fachkräftediskussionen geführt wurden, entwickelte sich so die Idee, junge Menschen aus beiden Städten zu „Global Ambassadors/Globalen Botschaftern“ auszubilden und zu ernennen. Da es bisher noch keine transatlantischen Partnerschaften zwischen „formalen“ und „non-formalen Bildungseinrichtungen“ gegeben hat, betreten wir nunmehr Neuland. Hierbei zu sammelnde neue Erfahrungen könnten wegweisend sein. Im Dezember 2014 kommt die erste Gruppe von jugendlichen Studierenden des Stella and Charles Guttman Community College aus NYC nach Berlin, um zusammen mit Jugendlichen aus dem STREET COLLEGE-Netzwerk die Stadtkultur Berlins zu erforschen. Dabei werden sie sich einerseits ihren diversen Interessenschwerpunkten widmen, um diese später vor allem dann zu nutzen, wenn es darum geht, evtl. Ergebnisse gemeinsam vorzustellen. Da die jungen Gastgeber aus allen Ecken Berlins kommen, werden sie andererseits während der Forschungen diverse und sehr verschiedene Kieze aufsuchen und so dessen Hintergründe und Geschichten erfahren: Was sind „Plattenbauten“ und woher kommen sie eigentlich? Wie ist die Wohnungssituation in Berlin insgesamt im Gegensatz zu der in New York, wo Wohnfläche immer heißes und vor allem teures Thema ist? Wie sind die Gegenden im Wedding oder Kreuzberg, wo heute eine hohe Konzentration an Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund lebt, entstanden – und was war eigentlich mit diesem „Gastarbeiter“-Programm? In einer Woche sollen junge Teilnehmer*innen eigenständig und gemeinsam versuchen, eine andere Stadt zu erleben, zu fühlen, zu entdecken … Im Frühling 2015 wird die Gruppe aus Berlin den Rückbesuch nach New York City antreten, um dort, zusammen mit den Partnern vor Ort, die gleichen Aktivitäten zu absolvieren, um die gleichen Erfahrungen und Lernprozesse zu erleben – eben nur ganz anders … Das gemeinsame Ziel des „Global Ambassadors Programs“ ist es, sowohl für die jungen Leute des Stella und Charles Guttman Community College als auch für die von Gangway e.V. kritisches Denken und kreative Fähigkeiten zu entwickeln, Wissen über die jeweils andere Kultur zu erwerben und ein Verständnis von sich selbst als Weltbürger zu entwickeln. Letzteres ist für junge Menschen, die bisher nur selten Gelegenheiten hatten, ihren Kiez, geschweige denn ihre Stadt oder ihr Land zu verlassen, äußerst schwierig, denn wie kann ich ein Empfinden für die Welt entwickeln, wenn ich kaum weiß, was hinter meinen Kiez-Grenzen liegt? ——————- Global Ambassadors – A transatlantic educational exchange platform from The COLLEGE STREET – Berlin and the Stella and Charles Guttman and Community College – NYC Since 2008 Gangway e.V. has successfully lead and facillitated a youth Hip Hop exchange program between Berlin and New York City called “The Bronx Berlin Connection”. Last year the project won the prize “Excellent Landmarks in the Land of Ideas” (by Deutsche Bank) and it has been able to enjoy various media reports over the years. With a total of five group visits to NYC and four return visits from our partner groups from NYC in Berlin, we have been able to gain valuable experience on the subjects of “educational processes in the context of transatlantic youth exchange projects.” One of the important objectives of the STREET COLLEGE is to provide access to education and occupation – but also to provide simple ways of pursueing ones interests. After all, “The Bronx Berlin Connection” didn´t win last years price because “youth exchange” ideas are particularly innovative, but because we are able to involve young people who are often not reached by conventional exchange programms. Because of an excellent network in both New York City and Berlin and discussions with our project partners “The Stella and Charles Guttman Community College” in NYC about the circumstances of our target groups in the two cities in which we are active, the idea to develop and “nominate” young people to “Global ambassadors” was born. Since there has never been a transatlantic partnership between “formal” and “non-formal educational institutions,” we are now entering new territory. New experiences and insights gathered in this programm could be groundbreaking. In December 2014, the first group of young students from the Stella and Charles Guttman Community College – NYC will come to Berlin to study the urban culture of Berlin together with young people out of the STREET COLLEGE network. Together they will address various areas of interest and later present any results and works on the answers to the questions they had developed, to the public. As the young hosts come from all corners of Berlin they will visit various and very different neighborhoods during their research and in the process learn its background and stories: What are “Plattenbauten” and where do they come from? What is the housing situation in Berlin as a whole as opposed to New York City, where living space is always a hot and especially expensive item? How were the areas in Wedding and Kreuzberg with a high concentration of people with a migration background created and why? – and what was this “guest worker” program all about? In one week young participants will independently and together gain inside into the experience of a different city, they will feel, they will discover … In the spring of 2015, the group from Berlin will embark on the return visit to New York City to undertake the same activities and to experience the same lessons and engagge in the same learning process – just….completely different … The common goal of the “Global Ambassadors Program” for the young people of the Stella and Charles Guttman Community College as well as Gangway eV ” is to develop critical thinking and creative skills, to acquire knowledge about each other’s cultures and to develope an understanding of themselves as global citizens. For young people who have rarely had opportunities to venture out of their neighborhoods, let alone leave their city or their country the latter is extremely difficult, because how can I develop a feeling for the world if I hardly know what’s behind my neighborhoods borders?
